Dial Up Speed

Though many people are shifting to broadband Internet connections, there are still a lot of people who use dial up as their means of connecting to the Internet.

Though broadband Internet is now becoming widely available and affordable, there are still some people who either do not have access to such services. Some meanwhile find a broadband connection just too impractical. In many cases, broadband usually costs more than a dial up connection.

Testing an Internet connection\'s speed has become popular because of broadband connections. But testing connection speeds is not only limited to broadband. In fact, the speed testing was first introduced when during the time when broadband Internet was still not widely available to home users.

An Internet speed test works by transferring data to and from a certain website. A basic speed test is composed of two parts, which measures both channels of a connection. The first part of the test usually is the download test which measures your downstream channel\'s speed. The second part is the upload test which measures the connection\'s upstream speed.

The results that is presented is expressed in often in kilobits per second or kbps. The maximum download speed that can be achieved in a dial up connection is 56 kbps, and a max upload speed of 48 kbps. For dial up tests, images or picture files are used to test the speed. A file picture file, usually a JPEG or GIF, with a specific file size is downloaded from the website. The time it takes to complete the transfer is recorded. The same thing goes when testing speed of the uploads.

When testing a dial up connection\'s speed, make sure you use a test that is specifically designed for a dial up Internet connection. Running a test that is designed for a broadband connection will not cause any problems but may really take a long time to complete. Also, the results may not be accurate.
